what to do when your inner voice is a jerk.

Self talk is important.  I think we all know that.  What we tell ourselves day in and day out determines a lot about how we interact in the world as well as our level of contentment and general happiness.  So, what do you do when your self-talk is less like a cheerleader telling you can do anything and everything and more like an annoying bully saying you can’t do anything, ever?

First, try and notice it when you hear that bully come out.  Every time you hear yourself saying anything negative to yourself, acknowledge that you’re doing it.

Second, take it to the next level:  when you hear your inner bully, acknowledge the voice as if it were a petulant child.  If a 6 year old child was in front of you whining and badgering you for candy how would you treat them?  What would you say?  Perhaps with an air of “sounds like you need a nap,” you’d say “I understand that you think candy is great for dinner but it’s simply not true.”  I urge you to start talking to your inner bully and treat it like the annoyance and petulant child that it is; a little patience, a tone of wisdom and confidence that it doesn’t know what’s real-dismissive of its unfounded words.

What do you think?  Are you going to try this technique?  Let me know on our FACEBOOK timeline.
